Submission Requirements

Although there is no official submission format in the literary world there are some standards that editors and literary agents expect. Submissions not adhering to these standards will label the author as a novice and lower expectations before the agent or editor begins reading the manuscript. We expect our authors to adhere to these standards. This is to be a learning experience.

  • Cover Page: Place title in center of page. Normally the author’s name would go below this. Do not add your name. Normally the author’s name, address, phone, e-mail, and word count would be listed in the left lower corner. Do not add this identification. Do not add name or school anywhere on this submission.
  • Place page number in the header of each page.
  • Begin the short story (and each chapter in a novel) one third of the way down the page.
  • Use simple 12 point fonts. Avoid colored or fancy fonts. You can’t go wrong with Courier, Arial, or Times New Roman.
  • Use one inch margins all around—top, bottom, and sides.
  • Double space
  • Use two double spaces after short story title or chapter title.
  • Align left and leave a jagged right margin on the manuscript.
  • Use an asterisk (*) or pound sign (#) on a separate line to indicate a scene break.
